Red Grooms was born in 1937 in Nashville, Tennessee, and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, and the Hans Hoffman School of Fine Arts in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Grooms lives and works in New York City and is represented by Marlborough Gallery.

One of the pioneers of the ‘Happenings’ of the late 50’s and early 60’s Grooms has made more than 15 films, is known for his site specific sculptures and installation art, and wall reliefs. He has worked extensively in all printmaking media.

Grooms’ work can be found in museum and private collections worldwide including the Art Institute of Chicago, Fort Worth Museum of Contemporary Art, Fort Worth, Texas; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, NYC; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; and the Nagoya City Museum, Nagoya, Japan.
